HOW MATS FORM AND WHY THEY ARE MORE SERIOUS THAN THEY LOOK

Mats form when loose, dead hair gets tangled with the growing coat and is not brushed out regularly. They are most common behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, and around the legs. What starts as a small tangle can quickly tighten into a dense knot that pulls on the skin, traps moisture, and creates a breeding ground for bacteria and skin irritation. Left too long, mats can become painful and even cause skin wounds underneath. Catching them early makes a big difference in what we are able to do.

WHEN DE-MATTING IS POSSIBLE AND WHEN A SHAVE DOWN IS THE BETTER CHOICE

Not every mat can or should be brushed out. If the matting is too close to the skin, covers a large portion of the body, or has been there long enough to cause skin irritation underneath, attempting to de-mat can do more harm than good. In those cases we will always recommend a shave down as the kinder option and be upfront with you about why. Our priority is your dog's comfort and wellbeing, not preserving coat length at any cost. We will always talk through the options with you before we begin so there are no surprises.
